LSUS Math Colloquium #2 of 2005

No nontrivial Hamel basis is closed under multiplication

Colloquium speaker: Dr. Rick Mabry
Where: BH 405. When: 3:30 pm, Wed., March 2, 2005.

Well, the term "colloquium" might be a bit formal in this case.

I'll introduce the notions of Hamel bases, field extensions and
endomorphisms on fields (just the few bits we'll need, nothing too heavy).
I'll also try, briefly, to explain why on earth I would be interested in
looking at what appears to be such an arcane thing as this.

Students in upper-level classes should be able to understand the major
parts of the presentation, so feel free to announce this in such classes.

The results I'll present are contained in a paper (having the same title
as the talk) which has recently been accepted for publication in the
journal "Aequationes Mathematicae".
